5 Utterly Shocking Pedestrian Accident Statistics

It is important to know the most common pedestrian accident statistics. Understanding how and why pedestrian accidents happen will help us prevent them in the future. We can also create a more informed society about pedestrian laws and awareness.

1. One in Five Pedestrians Under 15 Years Old Who Died in Crashes in 2016 Was a Child.

It may not seem like a big deal, but when you consider that 172,000 children were injured in traffic accidents in 2013, it becomes more alarming. It is important to pay more attention to our children as well as the roads when we are driving.

2. In 2015, 129,000 Pedestrians Received Treatment in Emergency Departments Due to Non-fatal Crashes.

Hollywood Presbyterian is one of California’s largest hospitals. This is a 7-building acute-care facility that has 434 licensed beds. It also employs 1,400 people and has an 800-member medical staff. Hollywood Presbyterian would need to be filled up roughly 297 times to provide care for these injured people.

3. Alcohol Was Involved in Almost Half (48%) the Crashes Resulting in Pedestrian Fatalities.

Despite the fact that drunk driving is a common sight in movies, billboards and posters at bars in California, many people still take the chance of driving while intoxicated. This statistic shows how dangerous it can be to drive drunk.

4. The Likelihood That a Vehicle Will Strike a Pedestrian and the Severity of the Injury Increases as the Speed of the Vehicle Increases.

Driving above the speed limit can cause otherwise good drivers to make mistakes. Pedestrians rarely have the time to react, and drivers are often unable to brake or swerve. Even a slight difference in speed could have devastating effects.

5. In a Car Accident, Pedestrians Are 1.5x More Likely to Die Than Occupants of Passenger Vehicles.

This number is unsettling because so many car crashes occur every year, and the majority of them are in California. To lower these numbers, and stay safe in California, it is important to pay more attention while driving and crossing the street.
